When I have a nice whiskey in my hand, I like to take things slow.  There’s nothing more frustrating than looking down at my glass and seeing a light brown mix of muddled water and whiskey.  Anyone who orders their whiskey on the rocks has been there, the dreaded whiskey + tepid water cocktail.  Ultimately, there are simple ways to avoid this from happening again: drink your whiskey neat; use whiskey stones; or get some damn ice balls.

Most whiskey experts, including Yours Truly, agree that having a little water in your whiskey actually helps bring out the flavor. Browsing online, one can find plenty of “solutions”, from Scottish bottled water to $500 ice molds.  While these options may appear novel, and worth the money, don’t be fooled.  All that is needed is a simple ice ball mold to solve your whiskey problems. The 3rd grader science behind the ice ball is simply that there is less surface area which prevents the warm environment from touching as much of the ice cube.  Full disclosure, less melting means less cooling effect, but as long as you’re drinking decent whiskey, this shouldn’t be of issue.
